Annual Fall Cookout Moved to October 31!

Due to high winds forecast for Tuesday, the ACM/Systems Cookout has been moved to Friday, October 31. The time is unchanged from what was previously announced, from 12 PM to 2 PM.

The event will begin at noon by the back side of the Engineering and Computational Sciences building, near Webb Center and the Maglev tracks. Beef and vegetarian burgers, hot dogs, snacks, and soft drinks will be served.

Come out to enjoy a warm meal and converse with CS and ACM students, staff, and faculty.

ICPC Mid-Atlantic Regional Programming Competition on Saturday October 25

This year, ODU will send 3 teams to the regional competition and we will be at Duke University site. There are around 150 teams in this regional competition including Virginia Tech, Duke, UNC, UVa, Johns Hopkins, UMCP, UD...

ACM Programming Contest Resounding Success

Thanks to the generous support of the Computer Science Department, the ACM student chapter held its first programming contest of the year on Saturday, September 27. Seven teams from ODU and NSU competed to solve the most amount of problems correctly in the least amount of time. The four ODU teams solved two or more problems. The first place team completed five problems correctly.

The top programmers picked from this competition will form three teams to represent ODU in the ICPC Mid-Atlantic Regional Competition at Duke University in October 25th, 2008.

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is a high-profile programming competition sponsored by IBM. This competition is divided into 44 regions around the world with about 7,000 teams compete every year. The Mid Atlantic Region has over one hundred and thirty teams representing schools from Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. The top two teams in the Regional Competition this year will advance to the World Final held in Stockholm, Sweden on April 18-22, 2009.

The teams will meet every Saturday to prepare for the Regional competition. Any students who are interested in solving problems and improving their programming skills are also welcome to join. For the schedule and location, email Duc Nguyen at dnguyen [at] cs [dot] odu [dot] edu.

The ACM student chapter would like to extend thanks to Dr. Steven Zeil for providing the problems and judging the contestants' responses, Duc Nguyen, Vice Chair of the ACM, for his generous time contribution in making this event possible, Tihomir and the Systems Group for setting up the contest environment and Mrs. Phyllis Woods, Terri, and Shanda for providing lunch and dinner for all attendees.

The next ACM Programming Contest will be held on Saturday, January 24 2009.
